Extracellular death factor (EDF) is a linear pentapeptide that activates the cell death pathway in a subset of communicating cells. Programmed cell death in bacteria is dependent on a system of cell-to-cell communication termed quorum sensing. It is sensitive to extreme pH, high temperatures, and other cellular stress. EDF has been shown to trigger cell death at 2.5 ng/ml which significantly reduces population size in some E. coli cultures.
